• • Core & Required Class Schedules • • The times are as follows: Period 01: 7:00-8:20 Period 02: 8:30-10:50 Lunch: 10:55-11:55 Period 03: 12:00-1:20 Period 04: 1:30-2:50 Period 05: 3:00- 4:20 - First Years and Second Years do not take electives, except in special circumstances.
- The Flying class offered at Period 05 on Fridays does not count as an elective class slot, and can be attended by all students at their discretion.
- Third Years and above must take at least (2) Elective classes.
- Sixth Years and Seventh Years can opt out of taking the core courses, or cannot take them if they do not pass their OWLs or NEWTs.
- If an elective overlaps with another class time, students may ask permission of the professor to take the class anyways and make up the work in their free time.
- Classes that are marked in a lower grade can be taken later on if it fits into your students schedule.
- Just because you cannot fit a class into you schedule doesn't mean you can't talk to the professor about joining or starting a club on the subject.

• • Rules & Regulations of Claims • • Below is a consecutive list of all the canon characters that are still living in the present day Wizarding World. Some of them may already be claimed, while others are still open to be taken up. Here is a short list we have here on W&B to make things fair on staking claims. There are two different types of claims, claims on characters and claims on the minor families who we know nothing of their canon families (at least to date). Canon families that we know of to date shall not be altered, but minor families can be. - Common names such as Granger or Smith may be made as a separate family that is not related to the canon family, but will be highly regulated.
- You must be an active member of the site for at least one month before making a claim on a major canon character.
- Upon making a claim you may play the NPCs of the family who are not at Hogwarts until one of them goes up for adoption.
- To apply for a canon character you simply fill out the longer character application as you normally would, and then link the application in a reply below. You must supply a 600 word roleplay example when applying for a canon character.
- If you go inactive as a member with a claim on a major canon character, your claim will be withdrawn and they will be placed back up for for grabs from another more active member.
- If you make a character that is a part of the minor canon families in the second list, and you go inactive, they will be placed back up for adoption, though more leniency is given here than to major canon characters.
- This list is made up of most of the canon families of the books. Some were excluded to help keep the list short. If you have a character based in a canon family you do not see here simply include it in the app and we shall add it to the minor canon list.

So, it's time to start looking at subjects. Do you know what you're character is going to be good at yet? When trying to decide what classes work well together, think back to muggle subjects that people often are good at. Though not always, many of those good at math are also good at science, same with history and literature. Here it's easily to pair some of the classes together that are more similar in their structures. Arithmancy would likely go well with Muggle Studies given the more technological things one will be learning in the course, while Potions and Herbology are similar in nature. The same goes for Transfiguration and Charms, or Physical Education and Defense Against the Dark Arts, where students will learn to duel. You will notice there were change make to the course to keep up with the pretense of a present-day school and the effect that muggles have begun to have upon the wizarding world.
• • Core Classes • •
- Arithmancy: The magical discipline that studies the magical properties of numbers, including predicting the future with numbers and numerology. Originally offered as an elective subject from the third year on at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, it has since been added to the core class list to be taught to first and second years so each of the students have a basic understanding of higher mathematical functions. It can be taken from third year on as an elective. The homework assignments included writing essays that require the consultation and/or composition of number charts, as well as the completion of certain formulas provided by the professor.
- Charms: A class of spellwork that adds or changes certain properties to an object, distinguishing it from transfiguration, Charms has always been one of the main core classes at Hogwarts. Mastering the science of charmwork is clearly essential to performing the greater part of magic and is a large part of performing basic magic and spells that will likely be used in day-to-day life upon graduation of Hogwarts. An object that has a lasting charm placed on it is called bewitched, though charms in general appear to last longer than other spells. Most Jinxes and Hexes fall under the category of a charm.
- Defense Against the Dark Arts: A required subject from first year to fifth year, Defense Against the Dark Arts (commonly shortened to DAtDA) used defensive and offensive magic to help one protect them self from an attack by a muggle, another witch or wizard, of a creature, whether they be magical or not in nature. The curriculum of the class varies greatly depending on what the professor at the time deems appropriate, but generally covers a duelling section each year. Unlike some of the other classes, the lessons generally have a practical approach to them, with theoretical assignments given as homework.
- Herbology: The study of magical and mundane plants and fungi, herbology is the wizarding equivalent to botany. In Herbology, students learn to care for and utilize plants, and learn about their magical properties, and what they are used for. Many plants provide ingredients for potions and medicine, while others have magical effects of their own right. Herbology is a mandatory class at Hogwarts for the first five years of a student's education. Students spend class time learning about the different varieties of magical plants that exist. The further into a student's education the more difficult and dangerous the plants become. Like DAtDA, much of this class is of a practical approach, with the occasional theoretical assignments given for homework. Students are encouraged to wear their shabbier roped for this class as they can become spoiled or dirty, and must also where appropriate shoes.
- History: Once referred to as History of Magic and taught by a certain boring ghost, Hogwarts has reformed it to include the history of both the wizarding and muggle world, though much of the class still focuses heavily on wizarding culture. It now also brings in more of the foreign affairs that the class once lacked, and teaches the students starting in pre-history in their first year, to present day in their fifth year.
- Muggle Studies: Once considered an easy elective, Muggle Studies in now a required course for the first five years of classes, teaching the students about muggles in a proper fashion, how to blend properly, and also how to utilize their technology. While students will be learn a lot about their muggle counterparts, this will also become a large technology class and will take time each week to explain how all the various types of day-to-day technology works, which further assists in the ability to blend seamlessly in with the muggles.
- Physical Education: After the Battle of Hogwarts, many of the faculty and students recognized how helpful a good physical regimen could be, not only in dueling and spellwork, but also in general. Physical education usually has the students sparing to teach them good footwork and running laps. If/When the professor is a muggle or halfborn, team sports are sometimes taught to the students. This class is a requirement for first and second years to teach them how to keep a healthy lifestyle and give them a "recess" time, and can also be taken from third year on as an elective. This is the only core class that requires students to change out of their normal class/work robes and into a pair of shirts of shorts and tennis shoes to make good for running and sparring in.
- Potions: In this class students learn the correct way to brew potions, a magical mixture that is commonly brewed in a cauldron and is used to create various effects on the drinker. Following specific recipes and using various magical ingredients to create the potions, the students start with simple ones in their first year and move to more advanced ones as they progress in knowledge. A standard potions kit includes plant ingredients such as Belladonna and supplies such as glass phials and weighing scales. At Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Potions is a required subject for students, from the first year to the fifth year. Potion recipes can be found in many books, including the books the students at Hogwarts use in their classes, but the intricacies of timing, ageing, stirring techniques, and bottling which are much more difficult to learn without the mentoring of the experienced masters. Certain ingredients can be found in the cupboard in the classroom, but others have to be bought before the start of the year at the apothecary.
- Transfiguration: The art of changing the form and appearance of an object or being, transfiguration is a required class for first to fifth years, like many of the other core classes at Hogwarts. There are limits to Transfiguration, which are governed by Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration and there are also many branches of Transfiguration, including Cross-Species Transfiguration and Human Transfiguration. Transfiguration is rearguard as "very hard work" and is "more scientific" than any other subject as in, you have to get it exactly right for the transfiguration to be successful. Students practice actual transfigurations during classes and accidents sometimes result in partial transfigurations, which is always quickly rectified by the professor. Like Charms and DAtDA, the class is mostly practical in nature with theoretical and practice homework sometimes being assigned.
• • Electives • •
- Alchemy: Provided there is sufficient demand, Alchemy, an ancient science, is an optional subject taught to sixth and seventh-years. Alchemy is a branch of magic that concerns the studies of the four basic elements, fire, water, earth and air, as well as the study of the transmutation of substances. It is commonly taken up by students studying potions and/or transfiguration in their sixth and seventh years and resembles a wizarding version of chemistry. Besides the practical approach of alchemy, a theoretical approach is taught as well, involving philosophy and alchemical literature. The science itself dates back to antiquity, though there were still wizards and witches actively studying and practicing it in the twentieth century.
- Ancient Runes: The Study of Ancient Runes (commonly shortened to Ancient Runes) is an elective course at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, that can be taken by students third year and above. It is the study of runic scriptures, or Runology. Ancient Runes is a mostly theoretical subject that studies the ancient runic scripts of magic.
- Apparation: Similar to a Muggle School's Drivers Ed Course, the Apparition class is an optional twelve-week course offered to sixth and seventh years at Hogwarts for, as its name suggests, learning how to Apparate. The class begins shortly after the Christmas holidays and the course costs the students to join, as the same would expect from a drivers course. At the end of the class, those who passed the test received a licence to Apparate. Those who splinched themselves, even in a minor way, would be forced to retake the test. Apparition is a magical method of transportation and is basically the magical action of travelling by having the user focus on a desired location in their mind, then disappear from their current location and instantly reappear at the desired location; in short, it is a form of teleportation. It is by far the fastest way to get to one's desired destination, but is tricky to pull off correctly and disastrous if botched up. Apparition is a popular method of travel in the wizarding world, though it is stated that plenty of adult witches and wizards don't bother with it.
- Art: Like the muggle version, this class teaches the students how to improve their drawing, painting and sculpting skills, as well as try maybe different other things, such as how to make art using magic rather than the "muggle" way, and also teaches students how to turn photographs and paintings into moving portraits. The class is an elective class accessible only to third year students and above.
- Astronomy: Once a required class, it has been pushed back to make room for some of the new core classes, but still proves to be a highly popular class and is often full of students. Astronomy lessons are spent learning the names of stars and the movements of planets and often take place late at night in the Astronomy tower. It is a largely practical class with some homework that involves a more science based pursuit of knowledge of the plants and the stars.
- Care of Magical Creatures: One of the elective course offered to third years and up, this course teaches students about a wide range of magical creatures, from flobberworms to Fire crabs, and even unicorns and thestrals. Students are taught about feeding, maintaining, breeding, and proper treatment of these various creatures. It is often considered an easy and fun class and never offers much homework.
- Cultural Magic: Once labelled Ancient Studies, the class as since been expanded to review the different ways that other witches and wizards in different cultures outside of Great Britain, both in the past and present, conducted their magic. Much of this class involves learning wandless magic and utilizing other instruments that witches and wizards in other cultures use and is highly practical in nature, with a few theoretical homework assignments.
- Divination: The method of divining the future, or gathering insights into future events, through various rituals and tools. Divination is an elective subject available beginning in a student's third year. Students study a myriad of ways to scry information about the future, including tea dregs, crystal balls, visions, and Astrology and horoscope charts. Other methods of divining the future include smoke patterns, dreams, tarot cards, and the interpretation of prophecies, though the latter is quite rare. Guides and textbooks allow students of Divination to discern or translate what observed symbols intend to mean.
- Flying: This class started as one stand alone lesson for first years to familiarize themselves with a broomstick has since expanded to help teach students in a formal setting how to ride a broom and give them a secure environment to practice in. This class is not a consecutive class but rather a stand alone class that can be taken anywhere in a student's third to seventh year. It is a practical application only class and has no homework, much like Apparation.
- French: With complaints from both muggle and wizarding parents alike, a foreign language course has been added to the school's curriculum and is offered to third years and above as an elective class. Little to no magic is learned in this class and much of the work is nearly identical to a muggles' foreign language class.
- Music: An Elective class offered to those of the musically inclined students of hogwarts, the Music classes offer an outlet similar to the Art classes and do not specialize in one aspect, but cover many. Like many of the other elective classes, this is for third years and above and offers the opportunity to learn how to read music sheets, play instruments, or work on ones singing ability.

Discipline at Hogwarts is enforced by a variety of people and depending on their position within the hierarchy, they can hand out different kinds of punishment. The Hogwarts caretaker can suggest to teachers, Heads of House, or the Headmaster to put students in detention. He can do so verbally or by using a form. He cannot hand out detention himself or dock house points.
Prefects can dock house points from all students except other prefects and the Head Boy or Head Girl, and also put students in detention. The Head Boy and Head Girl have the same powers as prefects, but in addition they can dock points from prefects.
All Hogwarts teachers can deduct house points from students and can put any student in detention. The Heads of House in addition, can suspend students of their house, or propose they be expelled. The Headmaster can use all of the authorised punishments listed above, but can also revoke any punishment handed out. Apparently, any expulsion needs to be confirmed by the Headmaster before the student gets expelled.
The Ministry of Magic has no right to punish students for their wrongdoings in school, nor do they have the right to expel students and confiscate wands unless charges have been successfully proven and passed.

• • Hogwarts • • • • Houses • • For those of you unaware of the Hogwarts houses, here will be a break down of everything you need to know about the houses and the general differences between them. Remember, some students show traits of two houses, or even all the houses, but it is their over all personality and also their desire to be in a certain house that lends to wear they are placed. Below, above the house descriptions, I will link several reliable tests if you are unsure of what house your character should be in, or if you'd like to take them for fun. Keep in mind my organization of the houses on this site is all alphabetical and has no reflection upon my opinions for any of the houses. None of the links below are required reading but there for your own reference purposes and for what not.
Sorting Tests/Quizzes • • Gryffindor • • (#B8161C) (#FCCE15) (#E4552E) (#262020) Common Positive Traits: courage, pride, heroism Common Negative Traits: arrogance, recklessness, lack of common sense House Founder: Godric Gryffindor House Mascot: Lion House Ghost: Nearly Headless Nick
Gryffindors are mainly known for their “daring, nerve and chivalry,” as well as their courage, pride and heroism. They certainly sound like the heroes of the story in this context, but you should also know that many Gryffindors are reckless and arrogant and will often rush head long into things without thinking them through, neglecting their common sense and putting too much faith in their intuition. The outgoing nature of most of the Gryffindors often leads to loud, raucous parties and pranks, but there are still that show traits of the other houses and those who are quiet but strong in nature.
Gryffindors' colors and attitude corresponds to the element of Fire. The common room is located in one of the highest towers at Hogwarts and the entrance is found behind the portrait of The Fat Lady on the seventh floor in the east wing of the castle. Their portrait guardian will open to reveal a hole if she if given the correct password, which is changed at random intervals throughout the year.
Gryffindor House Links: • • Hufflepuff • • Common Positive Traits: Hard-working, honest, loyal Common Negative Traits: Stubborness, stagnancy, non-confrontational House Founder: Helga Hufflepuff House Mascot: Badger House Ghost: Fat Friar
Hufflepuffs are where those who “are just and loyal” find their home, “those patient Hufflepuffs are true and unafraid of toil.” Hufflepuffs are well known for their hard work and their honesty and loyalty. More negative traits include their stubbornness, their often non-confrontational nature and their scary tendency to take the heads off of anyone who hurts their friends and family. Having grown up in a house stock full of Hufflepuffs, I can often spot them very easily and have my own love for the badgers. Sometimes they can be lazy and are similar to the hobbit in their love of the earth and hearth and their at ease in their homey environments and with their friends and families, corresponding the house to the element of earth.
Hufflepuffs aren’t afraid of hard work and don’t put physical labor beneath them, intending to do the best of any job they are given, though sometimes they’d rather spend a good quiet day with the family than toil it away all through the day. While it’s not often discussed, never cross a Hufflepuffs. They have claws and fangs and will quickly come to the defense of their friends and families and will back them and help them in any and every way possible. The Hufflepuff Dormitories and common room are located in the basement, along the same corridor where you can find the portrait that hides the kitchens. The House can be access by tapping the barrel two from the bottom, middle of the second row in the rhythm of "Helga Hufflepuff."

• • Ravenclaw • • (#03899E) (#12C6DE) (#C2D1D0) (#5E4B37) (#2B2522) Color Codes
Common Positive Traits: Intelligence, lust for knowledge, studious Common Negative Traits: Lack of connection with real world, emotionlessness, eccentricity House Founder: Rowena Ravenclaw House Mascot: Raven House Ghost: The Grey Lady
In good old Ravenclaw, “if you’ve a steady mind, those of wit and learning will always find their kind.” Ravenclaws are well known for their creativity, their wit, and their lust for knowledge. Less appealing characteristics include their sometimes dreaming or air-headedness and their lack of connection with reality. Often caught up in their own thoughts and daydreams, they are more logical than emotional and often will act the opposite of the Gryffindor and put too much thought into a situation, and not enough action, over analyzing situations and not jumping into action until it’s too late. Their personality and their mascot both correspond to the element of air. Ravenclaw is one of the least spoken of regarding the houses, in my own opinion. Many often forget they aren’t just intelligent but also creative.
Ravenclaws have an unusual propensity to become entrapped in their own world, whether it be in their own head or in a good book. This often causes them to appear a little lost, as though their connection with reality is held down by a very thin string. Often described as studious, not all Ravenclaws are actually overachievers. They may study their own favorite subjects with an intensity that may startle others, but that doesn’t mean they’re all geniuses or all scoring the best grades, though their plethora of random knowledge and their good memories certainly don’t hinder their studying. The common room and dormitories are located in a tower on the west side of the castle, opposite of the Gryffindor tower (which is located in the east). Guardian the door is a large raven door knocker that is hung up on a door that has no key hole and no knob. Unlike the rest of the dorm, to enter the person must answer a riddle that is proposed by the knocker. It will open to reveal a corridor that leads to the common room if answered correctly. If answered incorrectly, they will have to wait until someone else comes along who knows the answer.

• • Slytherin • • (#06441F) (#126639) (#228B22) (#C0C0C0) (#8E8E8E) Color Codes Common Positive Traits: Ambition, cunning, intelligence Common Negative Traits: Cruelty, intolerance, greed House Founder: Salazar Slytherin House Mascot: Snake House Ghost: The Bloody Baron
Slytherins are “those cunning folk [who] use any means to achieve their ends.” Their positive traits encompass ambition, cunning, and intelligence. More negative traits include cruelty, selfishness, and greed. I pulled these from a site which had compiled a list of all the different traits.I don’t exactly agree with the one listed for Slytherin, however. Once a friend of mine explained the difference between a Slytherin and a Gryffindor is one wants to save themselves and their own (their friends and family), while the other (the Gryffindor) wants to save everyone. In a way the Slytherins are the more practical of the two, even if that somehow manages to list them as selfish. Greedy can often go hand and hand with those with too much ambition, so this negative trait makes sense in the list.
Slytherins aren’t often cruel without reason, but they distance themselves emotionally because they don’t want to be hurt and their stand-offish nature can often come off as cruel and sarcastic. Slytherin corresponds to the element of water, given they are often fluid in how they handle the situations around them, and the fact that some snakes are amphibians. Unlike the rest of the houses which seem to have a "guardian" of some sort (The Fat Lady, the barrels and the raven knocker), the Slytherin house entrance has no such entrance and will only be revealed if you speak the correct password to the bare stone wall located at the end of one of the corridors in the dungeons. Like with the Gryffindor house, the Slytherins' password will change periodically.
• • Years/Grades • • Years are broken up by age, based on the student's age come September 1st. Ages should match their years as follows;
1st Year/6th Grade = 11 to 12 years old 2nd Year/7th Grade = 12 to 13 years old 3rd Year/8th Grade = 13 to 14 years old 4th Year/9th Grade = 14 to 15 years old 5th Year/10th Grade = 15 to 16 years old 6th Year/11th Grade = 16 to 17 years old 7th Year/12th Grade = 17 to 18 years old
• • Uniforms • • There is some dispute in the original uniforms worn (canon-wise). In the original books, students are required to wear a plain black work rode and a black pointed hat, the the hat is rarely worn except for formal occasions, like the Beginning and End of the Year Feast. There were no marks, colours or crests to determine between houses and students wear their own socks and shoes, but do not wear any clothing beneath their robes except their underwear.
Weird, right? We're going to be following something much closer to the movies. Official school uniforms, which should be worn during classes, include;
- Robes (Either plain black or accented with one's house colors & crests)
- Trousers/Skirts (Black, Ash Grey, or Plaid Patterns Reminiscent of House Colors)
- Button-Down Long Sleeved Shirts (White)
- Knitted Sweaters (Grey)
- Ties (Reminiscent of House Colors)
- Knee-High Socks (Black, Grey, or House Colors)
- Closed-Toed Shoes (Leather, Non-Slip Grip Shoes required for Labs and Herbology)
- Gym Shirt & Shorts (For Physical Education & Flying Lessons)
- Tennis Shoes (For Physical Education & Flying Lessons)
- A Black & Silver Winter Robe
Uniforms are only required to be worn while in class or in attendance of school events. Laundry baskets are located in each of the dorms by each of the student's wardrobes and are collected once a week by the house elves. Not all of the uniform must be worn every day, especially when taking the weather into account. The bare minimum that should be worn at any given time by a student is a skirt or pair of trousers, a button-down, tie, socks and shoes. While the base uniforms for students are all the same, students are allowed to wear ties, blazers, sweaters or skirts reminiscent of their houses, as reflected in the colors acceptable listed above.
Casual dress is allowed for students not in class or at school functions, but some basic rules are still to be held for the standard "muggle" wear, put in place to ensure that all clothing is considered appropriate. No exceptionally tight, short, ripped, baggy, or revealing clothing will be tolerated of any fashion, including on trips to Hogsmeade. This also includes no excessive "bling," piercings, spikes, collars, or chains. Shirts, bags, or any item of clothing with gang, drug, or alcoholic symbols are also banned. Professors and other adult members of the Hogwarts community can point out and restrict anything else deemed to be disruptive or a safety hazard at any time. Below are some examples of proper dress.
• • Pets • • During the 20th century, a lightly enforced rule was put upon students that they could bring an owl, a cat or a toad. Students would sometimes bring other pets such as mice, rats, and the like. Since the beginning of the 21st century, more pets and breeds have been accepted onto the campus under the principle that they are disciplined, non destructive, have proper housing and approved by the administration or head of house. Below are a list of pets considered acceptable at Hogwarts;
- Dogs (Any Breed, house trained)
- Cats (Any Breed, litter box trained)
- Rodents (Mice, Rats, Ferrets, Rabbits, Gerbils, Guinea Pigs, Hamsters & Chinchillas)
- Fish (No Tank may be bigger than 30 Liters [~10 Gallons])
- Birds (Owls, Parrots, Ravens, Etc)
- Frogs & Toads (No Poisonous or Venomous)
- Snakes (No Poisonous or Venomous & Must Be Under 1.5 Meters)
- Other Reptiles/Amphibians (Turtles, Tortoises, Iguanas, Lizards, Chameleons)
